BELCOURT, N.D.—A law enforcement officer was killed and another wounded in the line of duty near Belcourt in far northern North Dakota on Wednesday night, according to officials.
KXMC-TV news in Minot on Wednesday night cited Turtle Mountain Chippewa Chairman Wayne Keplin, who said a police officer died in a shooting but that he was uncertain if there had been an arrest made.
State Sen. Richard Marcellais of Belcourt told KXNews he had heard a shooting occurred during a traffic stop near the Rolette County town.
Law enforcement officials confirmed an investigation was under way. The state Bureau of Criminal Investigation has been called in.
They said more information would be released on Thursday.
The shooting took place in Rolette County, which is northwest of Devils Lake and near the Canadian border.
